Blackpool 2 Newcastle 0

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Blackpool’s Charlie Adam scores his side’s opening goal from the penalty spot. They went on to beat Newcastle 2-0

When Ian Holloway declared that he wanted his newly promoted, strictly low-budget side to imitate Spain, much sniggering ensued but precious few Newcastle fans were laughing. Silenced by the enterprise and technical excellence of Blackpool‘s clever pass-and-move game, those supporters saw Chris Hughton’s team fall to a first home defeat for more than a season.Despite riding their luck a little, particularly in the second half, Blackpool were frequently excellent. Galvanised by Charlie Adam’s midfield control, along with a refreshingly ambitious gameplan, they were so good that you sometimes wondered if Newcastle’s 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa in their last home game had been a mirage. On another day Newcastle might have scraped a win but instead they were brought down to earth with a bump. “It was frustrating but it was perhaps not one of our better performances,” said Hughton. “And Blackpool showed their qualities.”

BLACKPOOL ARE GOING UP!

Charlie Adam celebrates his superb free-kick
IAN Holloway’s men have achieved the impossible dream.
Brett Ormerod’s first-half winner ensured a fairytale victory for Blackpool in the play-off final and secured the most lucrative promotion in the history of English football.

The Seasiders twice come from behind to lead 3-2 at the break and clinch a place in the Barclays Premier League estimated to be worth £90million.

Michael Chopra put Cardiff ahead but Charlie Adam levelled with a free-kick for his 19th goal of the season before Joe Ledley restored the Welsh club’s advantage with a neat finish.

Yet the energy and desire that has been so evident in Ian Holloway’s side throughout the campaign again came to the fore as Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Ormerod struck from close range shortly before the break to put Blackpool in front.

Ormerod’s 13th goal of the season – undoubtedly the most important strike of the 33-year-old’s long career – gave the Seasiders an advantage they did not surrender.

FINAL SCORE: BLACKPOOL 3 CARDIFF CITY 2.
BLACKPOOL ARE PROMOTED TO PREMIER LEAGUE.

BLACKPOOL are on the way to Wembley.
As the hours tick away towards one of the biggest games in Blackpool FC’s history – the nervous excitement of Seasiders’ fans is reaching the crest of its tangerine wave.

On Thursday as the players boarded the bus to head to the play-off finals, scores of Blackpool FC fans gathered at Yeadon Way’s helter skelter roundabout to give them a send-off to remember.

A giant shirt with ‘Ollie’ emblazoned proudly across the centre stretched across the statue while a massive Blackpool FC flag turned the grass into an island of purest tangerine.
